MANY OF THE descriptions for the theaters listed on this site were excerpted from this wonderful book. Fully indexed, The Great Theatres of London presents each of these great buildings with well-researched text and breathtaking photos. For anyone even remotely interested in the stage, it is a must-read.
(Thanks to Robyn for the loan!)

The book was reprinted in January 1997 and is available from Amazon.com. Click on the book cover, and Amazon.com will walk you through the rest.

UNFORTUNATELY, this book didn't deliver all that it promised to Rickman fans, but author Maureen Paton, a reporter for the Daily Express, a British newspaper, did cover one of the more interesting aspects of his life: the proposal for Alan Rickman and his colleagues to obtain Riverside Studios. Due to the mishandling of the consortium's proposal, the situation was dubbed "Rivergate" among sympathizers in the British press.

The rest of the biography covers Rickman's life from childhood, with photos of an early school play (though he is not identified among the other cherubs in his class) up to his work on the HBO film Rasputin, in 1996, and is indexed. Paton tells Alan Rickman's story through library research and interviews with colleagues, friends and mentors. To order this book, click on the cover at left. Amazon.com will take care of the rest.

Excerpts of this book appear on That Sinking Feeling of the Rivergate page.

PLAYRIGHT PETER BARNES has had Rickman appear in several of his productions--from the stage (The Devil is an Ass) to the screen (The Spirit of Man). Rickman portrays Israel-of-the-ten-tribes-no-less Yates in "From Sleep and Shadow" in the Spirit of Man trilogy.

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS publishes a series of Shakespeare's works for students to better understand the play: "...the student will find a running synopsis of the action, an explanation of unfamiliar words, and a wide range of classroom-tested activities to help turn the script into drama."

The book is illustrated with photos of many stage productions; a photo of Rickman and Geraldine McEwan (who plays Gertrude) is on p. 155.

Edited by Richard Andrews and Rex Gibson.

CHRISTOPHER HAMPTON masterfully adapted the only novel by Choderlos de Laclos about sexual decadence and corruption in 18th-century France. If Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan should be remembered for any performance, it should be this one.

This is the second of four books of essays by Shakespearean actors. Alan Rickman provides an insightful discourse on his portrayal of Jacques in Shakespeare's As You Like It under the direction of Adrian Noble. Rickman had played Jacques eight years before and describes his character as more than "a famous speech on legs." Other actors who contributed include Juliet Stevenson, Fiona Shaw, David Suchet, Ian McDiarmid, Ben Kingsley and Kenneth Branagh.

Edited by Russell Jackson and Robert Smallwood

HARRIET WALTER (who starred with Alan in Benefactors and Sense and Sensibility, among other works), talks about her life and her craft in OTHER PEOPLE'S SHOES. Includes a resume of her work and pictures from her youth and of her stage productions--including one with her and Alan in The Seagull. Take a look! More information to come (once I've read it!). This book is not available in the U.S. as yet but can be found in bookstores in the U.K. (£16.99) and Canada ($39.99 CDN). ISBN: 0-670-88353-0. Copyright 1999 by Viking Publishers.
